What to Wear For Photos

To make your photos look high-end, your outfits need to complement the dry, golden environment of the Boise Foothills.

  • Colors to Wear: Earth tones! Olive green, burnt orange, terracotta, cream, and muted mustard look stunning here.
  • Fabrics & Fit: Flowing maxi dresses, upscale casual wear, linen button-downs, and boots work perfectly. You want fabrics that catch the famous Table Rock breeze.
  • What to Avoid: Avoid exact matching outfits (no matching white shirts and blue jeans). You also want to avoid colors that blend perfectly into the dirt and dry grass, like light khaki.

When is the Best Time to Shoot?

Planning an engagement session at Table Rock requires a bit of strategic timing and preparation. Because it is one of Boise's most popular outdoor landmarks, dialing in the perfect time of day and knowing exactly how to navigate the rugged environment will make your experience incredibly smooth and stress-free.

  • Getting to the Top: You can either hike the steep 1.5-mile trail from the Old Penitentiary, or we can drive directly to the top via Table Rock Road. Pro tip: The gate to drive to the top closes at sunset, so we have to time our exit perfectly!
  • The Wind: Because it is completely exposed, Table Rock is almost always windy. Embrace it! Wear your hair down or loosely styled so the movement adds drama to your photos.
  • Footwear: Even if we drive to the top, the terrain is rocky and uneven. Bring a pair of walking shoes or boots; stilettos are a massive safety hazard near the cliffs.

By timing our session perfectly around the golden hour light and coming prepared for the natural elements, we can effortlessly capture those iconic, sweeping views of the Treasure Valley. You just focus on enjoying the sunset together, and I will handle all the timing and navigation!

FAQ

Answered questions.

Everything you might want to know—up front.

1
Do we have to hike to the top for our photos, or can we drive?

You do not have to hike the steep 1.5-mile trail from the Old Penitentiary. We can drive directly up to the mesa via Table Rock Road. However, the gate to drive to the top closes exactly at sunset, so we have to carefully time our session and our exit!

2
What kind of shoes should I wear for this location?

Even when we drive to the top, the terrain at Table Rock is rocky, dirt-covered, and highly uneven. You should bring a pair of walking shoes, flats, or sturdy boots. Stilettos are a massive safety hazard near the sandstone cliffs and should be avoided completely.

3
It is always windy at Table Rock—how should I prepare for that?

Because the mesa is completely exposed, it is almost always windy. The best approach is to simply embrace it! Wear your hair down or loosely styled so the wind adds natural movement and cinematic drama to your photos. Flowing fabrics like maxi dresses also look stunning when they catch the famous Table Rock breeze.

4
Are there any parking fees or photography permits required?

No. There are currently no parking fees or photography permits required for standard engagement sessions at the top of Table Rock, making it an incredibly easy and accessible location for your shoot.

5
What happens if it rains or the weather is bad on our scheduled date?

Table Rock gets very muddy and slippery in the rain, making it unsafe and messy to shoot. Fortunately, if Idaho throws bad weather our way, we simply reschedule to the next available clear day for free.
